- Strauss, Lewis Lichtenstein
(1896-1974)
American government official. Born in Charleston, West Virgina, he initially worked selling shoes. In 1917 he joined Herbert Hoover's Belgian relief service. In 1919 he worked for the banking house of Kuhn, Loeb and Company and married a daughter of one of the partners. He became a partner in 1928. In 1941 he was called to active duty with the US navy; several years later he became rear admiral. He served on the Atomic Energy Commission.
